Described by the critics as something very special, SLIGO LIVE is delighted to present a very unique music experience performed by some of Ireland’s very talented young musicians from a range of backgrounds including traditional, jazz and classical. Ensemble Ériu are a septet led by Jack Talty and Neil O’Loghlen who draw on a wealth of creative sources to perform arrangements of Irish traditional music rooted in the styles of West and North County Clare. The group brings together a chamber ensemble of some of Ireland’s most exciting young musicians from a range of performance backgrounds including traditional, jazz and classical. The result is a unique combination of the fresh and familiar, a soundscape that is creatively progressive, yet rooted in tradition. Cherish the Ladies are the long-running, Grammy-nominated, Irish-American supergroup that formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene and has since toured the world, played the White House and the Olympics, recorded 15 outstanding albums including their latest, “An Irish Homecoming” which was also videotaped for an Emmy winning Public Television Special that is airing across America.
2015 see’s the ground breaking collectives 30th anniversary and what better way to celebrate that with a 11-night Irish tour covering the length and breadth of the county.
Under the leadership of the dynamic and irrepressible flute and whistle champion Joanie Madden, these ladies create an evening that includes a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements, and stunning step dancing. Their continued success as one of the top Celtic groups in the world is due to the ensembles ability to take the best of Irish traditional music and dance and put it forth in an immensely entertaining show.

SLIGO LIVE is delighted to present ‘When Peace Comes Dropping Slow’ in a co-production with the Hawk’s Well Theatre. This unique event encompasses a piece specially composed for W.B. Yeats 150th Centenary and a performance of ‘Reconciliation Suite’ written for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Tickets for this special event which takes place on Friday, 23rd October 2015 @ Hawk’s Well Theatre priced at €18 and €9 (U18’s) are on sale now.
Sligo is the spiritual home of poet, W.B. Yeats, and in conjunction with Yeats 2015, the National and International celebration of the 150th anniversary of Yeats’ birth, Sligo Live 2015 has a Yeatsian theme running through the programme.
The centrepiece of this is a concert ‘When Peace Comes Dropping Slow’. Sligo Live has commissioned a new piece of music from renowned composer, Michael Rooney, reflecting on W.B. Yeats’ work and particularly its relevance to 1916. It will be premiered by a spirited group of 20 of the region’s top young classical and traditional musicians, led by Sligo Academy of Music director, Niamh Crowley and fellow Sligo resident, Rooney. The Principals and the orchestra will also give the first public live performance of the three delightfully poignant pieces “Reconciliation Suite” which Michael wrote and played for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall during their historic visit to Sligo in support of the peace process.

Artists in Residence at The Leitrim Sculpture Centre
Call for Applications for 2016
Leitrim Sculpture Centre in association with Leitrim County Council Arts Office, are offering five residencies to visual artists, based at LSC.
Each residency includes an artist’s stipend of €2,500 and comes with a one-person exhibition at the end of the residency period.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D HIGGINS SET TO LAUNCH FLEADH CHEOIL 2015 IN SLIGO

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Ireland’s biggest traditional Irish music festival, kicks off in Sligo this weekend to begin an 8 day musical extravaganza that is expected to draw record crowds to the north west region.
The Fleadh will be launched on Sunday afternoon August 9th by President Michael D Higgins, who will address the crowds at the Wild Atlantic Way gig rig in the centre of the town. A series of musical events and colourful pageantry will precede the President’s address, which is expected to touch on themes of returning friends, heritage and volunteering.

Residential DADGAD Guitar Week, November 22nd – 27th, Ennis, Co. Clare

Here is the opportunity for guitar players to spend a few days under the tutelage of Clare guitarist MJ McMahon, while taking in the sights and sounds of Ennis. MJ will be the host tutor for this retreat and will teach the guitar workshops each morning. MJ uses the alternative tuning system – DADGAD in his tutorials as this is particularly suited to Irish and other Celtic music genres due to its modal nature. He will examine chords, chord structures and strumming patterns of some of the more typical tune types and keys in the Irish tradition; the Jig, Reel, Slip Jig and Hornpipe focusing on the keys of D, G, Em and Am. He was also focus on the use of sliding chords, inversions, bass runs, hammer–on technique and more complex strumming patterns.
