Final call for flute and whistle players: Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal competition

Peadar Ó Riada has put out the final call to flute and whistle players for entries to the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal 2015 competition, which will close on 2 October.  The final will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta next February.

This is the sixth year of the competition, established by Cork musician Peadar Ó Riada, to counteract the over-emphasis on technicality in other music competitions, and the failure to recognise the importance of spirit and musicality in playing.  Last year, the competition was won by a young fiddler from Brosna in Kerry, Darragh Curtin.  Other past winners include Cormac Begley, Tim McHugh, Aoife Ní Bhriain, Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and Oisín Morrison.
