EGAN IN THE DUMPSTER

Imagine finding a rare and historically important instrument in the skip, and that skip over 3,000 miles from where the instrument was made. That is just what Julie Finch did when she spotted a harp in a dumpster on West 26th Street in New York. The harp was, thankfully, the last a bit of ‘rubbish’ to be put into the skip from the clear out of a recently defunct shop. Finch rescued the harp and asked her friend Lorcan Otway for some advice about it. The Irishman knew immediately this was something special; its highly decorated soundboard and blue teal colour marked it as old and, on closer inspection, they discovered the maker’s name - one Egan of Dublin.

THE PADDY’S WAKE SESSIONS
‘The Paddy’s Wake Sessions’ play the main stage at Whelan’s of Wexford Street for a 2nd time in three weeks. After the success of their gig on the 19th of August they were asked back again to perform on Friday September 4th. It will be the launch night for their debut Single ‘Begin Again’.

What Castlebar needed was a Good Festival and they certainly got one with The World Fleadh this Summer!
Castlebar town said Goodbye to The World Fleadh on Saturday night and what a show it was. Martina Mc Bride was simply excellent, from her first song God Fearing Women thru all her hits including Rose Garden and Broken Wing she had the audience captivated.
>From the first day of the Fleadh with the Saw Doctors opening up in the Royal Theatre on Friday 31st July the Fleadh continued to gain momentum. Heidi Talbot and John Mc Cusker in the Linenhall opened to a great crowd and suited the Venue brilliantly. The Féile on the Mall on Saturday 1st August brought out the crowds to the streets to enjoy the Food Stalls while the younger ones enjoyed the Formula 1 Racing and all while the live Bands on stage in the mall kept everyone entertained.

During the period 1999 to 2004, in conjunction with the Irish Traditional
Music Archive (ITMA), Brian Lawler recorded interviews with 70 people
associated with the period, including ceili band founders and members,
promoters, dancers and radio personnel. He obtained a total of 42 hours of
recorded material. All of the edited recordings are available to the public
at the ITMA.

RUNRIG GUITARIST TO UNDERGO HEART BY-PASS
Malcolm Jones, guitarist with legendary Scottish band Runrig, entered hospital in July to undergo heart by-pass surgery. Inverness-born Malcolm, 49, underwent minor surgery after suffering a heart attack earlier this year. Following tests by-pass surgery has been recommended as a standard preventative procedure to ensure he experiences no further recurring heart problems. Unfortunately, the timing of the surgery forced Runrig to cancel three Danish concerts scheduled for the end of June.
