Mayo flute player takes home the Gold

Mayo flute player Jillian O’Malley won the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal at the final for the competition held in Cork on Friday 7 February, presented by Peadar Ó Riada live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Jillian, from Louisburgh in Co. Mayo, started playing whistle when she was just five years old, an instrument she has a lot of respect for, and one she feels often gets overlooked.  She has won many awards down through the years, including the Fleadh Cheoil All-Ireland titles on flute and slow airs on whistle.  She is very involved with the annual Féile Chois Cuain traditional music festival in her hometown.  As well as traditional music, she’s also a beginner on saxophone!

Jillian is a freelance translator, currently living in Carrick on Fergus in Co. Clare.  She will be taking up a translation position in the EU in Brussels in April.
Esteemed musicians and judges Michael Tubridy, Mary Bergin and Gary Hastings were united in their decision on the winner.  ”The music came very naturally to Jillian.  It was clear that she was really enjoying playing for us, and the music had great lift and energy.  Congratulations to Jillian on her award.”
Jillian was thrilled with her win.

“Tonight has been a very special night.  I had the opportunity to share the stage with some fantastic musicians, and to perform my music on a national platform, and it’s an honour to take home the gold medal.”

Jillian was presented with the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and €2500 at the event broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Gael Linn, Iontaobhas Fódhla, IMRO and the Rochestown Park Hotel are the others sponsors of the competition.

Bonn Óir Seán Ó Riada do Jillian O’Malley
Is í Jillian O’Malley ó Chluain Cearbháin i gContae Mhaigh Eo a thug léi Bonn Óir Seán Ó Riada Dé hAoine 7 Feabhra i gCorcaigh. Bhí Jillian ar dhuine de chúig iomaitheoir déag sa chraobh don Bhonn Óir, a craoladh beo ar an gclár Cuireadh chun Ceoil le Peadar Ó Riada ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Thosaigh Jillian ag seinm an fheadóg stáin nuair a bhí sí cúig bliana d’aois, uirlis a bhfuil an-mheas aici air i gcónaí, agus go measann sí go ndéantar neamhaird dó go minic.  Tá gradaim éagsúla buaite aici síos trí na blianta, ina measc Craobh na hÉireann ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann ar an bhfeadóg mhór agus ar an bhfeadóg stáin sna foinn mhalla.  Tá baint mhór aici le Féile Chois Cuain, féile cheoil bhliantúil a bhíonn ar siúl ina baile dúchais.  Chomh maith leis an gceol traidisiúnta, tá sí ag foghlaim sacsafóin!

Is saor-aistritheoir í Jillian, agus tá cónaí uirthi faoi láthair i gCorca Chaitlín i gCo. an Chláir.  Roimhe sin, caith sí tréimhse ina cónaí i gConamara, ag obair don chomhlacht Europus ar an gCeathrú Rua. Beidh sí ag bogadh chun na Bruiséile i mí Aibreáin chun post nua a thosú ansin le rannóg an aistriúcháin.
Ba iad Michael Tubridy, Mary Bergin agus Gary Hastings a bhí i mbun moltóireachta ar an gcomórtas, agus dúirt siad go raibh siad ar aon intinn maidir leis an mbuaiteoir.

“Ba léir gur tháinig an ceol go nádúrtha le Jillian, bhí sé fuinniúil agus bríomhar, agus bhí sé le feiceáil, fresin, go raibh sí féin ag baint an-taitneamh as a bheith ag seinm dúinn.”

Dúirt Jillian go raibh áthas an domhain uirthi an duais a thabhairt léi.

“Tá ríméad orm go bhfuair mé deis an stáitse a roinnt le scoth na gceoltóirí agus mo chuid ceoil a chur i láthair ar ardán náisiúnta.  Is mór an onóir dom an gradam seo a fháil, oíche fíor-speisialta a bhí anseo domsa go pearsanta.”

Bronnadh Bonn Óir Seán Ó Riada agus €2500 ar Jillian ag an ócáid a craoladh beo ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

Is iad Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Gael Linn, Iontaobhas Fódhla, IMRO agus Óstán Pháirc Bhaile an Róistigh na hurraitheoirí eile ar an gcomórtas.
