As the haggis is boiling and the neeps and tatties are prepped, Scottish trad-rock band Mànran are celebrating the work of Scotland’s earliest Poet Laureate Iain Lom MacDonald with their brand new single ‘Là Inbhir Lòchaidh’ (‘The Battle of Inverlochy’)
Although widely believed that Robert Burns was Scotland’s first Poet Laureate, Charles II named Iain Lom MacDonald as Scotland’s Poet Laureate during his 17th century reign. However as the Stuart line was unseated in 1689, and the subsequent Jacobite Risings failed to permanently restore the Stuarts, their status became a moot point. His stature has further been diminished by the fact that he composed exclusively in Gaelic, which even at that time was a language in decline.

Cork musician, 13, youngest finalist for Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal
A 13 year old Cork musician will have the honour of being the youngest musician to take to the stage in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Douglas on Friday 2 February in the final for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal.
Eimhear Flannery from Rockchapel will be the youngest of 16 finalists, one of only two musicians from Cork, along with Maighréad Ní Luasa from Cúil Aodha, who will compete for the prestigious title. John Paul Wick, from New Jersey, will be the competitor who must travel the furthest for the final on 2 February, which includes box and concertina players this year. Peadar Ó Riada will present the event live on his Cuireadh chun Ceoil programme on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. (more…)

A STELLAR line-up from the world of Irish traditional music, song and dance will headline a concert at Dublin’s iconic Abbey Theatre to celebrate UNESCO recognition of Uilleann Piping - The Sound of Ireland.
Leading artists including Noel Hill, Liam O’Connor, Seán McKeon, Paddy Glackin, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Robbie Hannan, Jimmy Canavan, the Rowsome Quartet and many more will feature in this unique performance which will be attended by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins. The strength of the piping community - in Ireland and abroad - will be showcased during the concert.
