The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail, which was established in 2013 with the aim of promoting, preserving and celebrating this region’s unique musical style, has added to the year round programme of events with two exciting new initiatives.
The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail Master Class Series is the latest initiative to be established by The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail and the first in the series has just taken place in Scartaglin, Co. Kerry. Thanks to Nicky and Anne McAuliffe for putting the students through their paces and to the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre, Scartaglin for hosting the event. The next Master Class will take place in Cork in early 2015.
The Sliabh Luachra Young Musicians’ Award is a new annual award that aims to recognize the achievement and support the further musical development of talented young traditional musicians. Applications will be invited from young musicians between 16 and 23 who demonstrate a keen interest in the music of Sliabh Luachra. The competition is now open and applications will be accepted until September 2014. The winner will be announced in October.
Launched earlier this year by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail aims to create a year–round calendar of events, bringing together festivals and venues throughout the region to attract visitors with an interest in the music and culture of the region. This exciting initiative is being led by the Arts Offices of Cork and Kerry County Council with assistance from IRD Duhallow.
