Tuam Trad Festival

Mark it in your calendar! The fifth annual Tuam Trad Festival has been confirmed for the weekend of September 19th – 21st, 2014. Now an established and prestigious traditional festival, Tuam will play host to the best of traditional entertainers from across the country and further afield for a feast of Traditional music, song and dance. Sessions will take place all weekend with album launches, busking competitions, and many other events yet to be confirmed.

Roudledum will be at the festival. Roudledum was formed in 1984 by four lads playing sessions in the region around Galway Bay. Their album recorded 30 years ago was recently re–released as a CD. Vincent Griffin (fiddle) lives in Feakle and his unique Clare style with hints of the Sligo tradition was honed when he lived for a few years in London and played with Roger Sherlock, Raymond Roland, Sean McGuire and many more.

Gerry Hanley (button accordion) who lives on the outskirts of Galway City, won the senior All–Ireland title at age 21 and has played throughout the USA, Europe and Australia. He was a member of the 1980 Comhaltas tour of USA/Canada. Gerry Mulvihill (banjo) lives near Oranmore and plays throughout Ireland and also tours with his wife Mary Staunton and has recorded several albums. Sean Heaney (vocals/guitar) is a singer/songwriter living in Spiddal.

He is a broadcaster with RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta and produced 7 song albums between 1995–2001 for the RnaG Realta song contest. His album EINNIU (1993) includes the well-known Irish language song Conamara.

Some Highlights for this year’s festival:

Music, Song and Dance Workshops. Mercy Primary School 11am– 1pm, Saturday September 20th. Accordion – Sharon Connell, Fiddle – James Carty, Concertina – Róisin Broderick, Flute – Eileen Hassett, Banjo – Magie Carty, Tin Whistle – Padraic Keane, Séan Nós Dancing – Patricia Ni Fhátharta. Traditional Singing – Carmel Gunning.

Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2014. Corralea Court Hotel 4pm, Saturday September 20th. One set of tunes to be arranged for public performance. Entries to be received by August 20th. Entry fee ?15. Prizes to include cash sum plus trophy. Saturday Night Céilí Mór with The Deenagh Ceili Band at Ard Rí House Hotel. Saturday September 20th. Dancing 9pm – late. Admission ?10. Refreshments served.
