A talented Family of Irish Traditional musician’s from Derry launched their debut album on February 6th. The O’Carolan Family – Karen, Ciaran, and Steven have been steeped in traditional music from a very young age. In the late 1990’s their father Jimmy who had an interest in Irish Traditional music sent the three siblings to Tin Whistle and Fiddle lessons at a local comhaltas branch in Derry.
It was in these early years that they gathered a vast knowledge, repertoire, and skill on the Flute, Fiddle, and Button Accordion, under the tuition of people like Caoimhín O Dhochartaigh, Eugene O’Donnell, and the Harrigan Family amongst others. Having that close connection as siblings the O’Carolans play with a distinctive blend and style that is unique its own right. Their Style is somewhat shaped and inspired by the music and musicians around them, predominantly from the Derry/Donegal area. Their sound is distinctly influenced by Bands such as Altan, The Bothy Band, Solas, De Danann and many other solo artists and musicians who they have crossed paths with.
The Trio released their debut album A language within at the opening of Feile Caoimhin in An Culturlann, Derry. Steven had this to say about the album ‘This is an exciting project as it is the first time we have recorded professionally together after years of playing together. We will also be joined on the album by twelve very talented guest musicians from the Derry/Donegal area who have been handpicked to help bring these carefully penned tracks to life’.
The album will consist of mostly original tunes written by the O’Carolans and produced by Steven himself, with well–known Flautist and Traditional musician Dave Sheridan as Audio engineer, and talented producer and musician from the band ‘Beoga’ Sean Óg Graham did the mixing and mastering.
