The Sunny Banks

Launch tour featuring music from Edel Fox (concertina) and Neill Byrne (fiddle)
www.edelfox.com

From counties Clare and Waterford respectively, Edel Fox and Neill Byrne have been playing music together for the past three years. Edel grew up in Miltown Malbay and over the years has become well–known as a Clare concertina player, specialising in the music of her native county. Neill was born and raised in Ferrybank, Waterford where he grew up in a very musicial household – both his father and sister are also musicians. He learnt much of his music from the great Wexford–based composer John Dwyer and Limerick fiddle player Noelle O’Connor. The combination of styles and influences between Edel and Neill has created a new and exciting sound.

While their influences range from duos like Noel Hill and Tony Linnane, Caoimhín Ó Raghaillaigh and Mick O’Brien, and James Kelly and Paddy O’Brien, they have a fresh approach. The lively dancing rhythm from Co. Clare is still evident but their repertoire is completely different. Together, they share a common interest in unusual versions of tunes and uncommon compositions from composers such as John Dwyer, Finbar Dwyer, Tommy Peoples, Charlie Lennon, Joe Liddy, Sean Ryan, Ed Reavy, Lorna Davey, Brendan McGlinchey, Paddy O’Brien (Tipperary) and Paddy O’Brien (Offaly). There repertoire also includes a composition of Edel herself. There new CD The Sunny Banks was launched at the Scoil Samhradh Willie Clancy in July. It also features 2012 TG4 Young Musician of the Year from An Rinn, Co. Waterford Caoimhín Ó Fearghail and Cavan bodhrán player Richie Lyons.

This August, they will embark on a three week launch tour of the US taking in Boston, Cape Cod and Assonet in MA, Burlington VT, Portland ME, Richmond RI, Fairfield CT, Coatsville PA, Washington DC, Baltimore MD and Syracuse NY along their way.
