The 20th James Morrison Traditional Music Festival which runs from Friday, August 3rd–5th, 2012 in Riverstown, Co. Sligo, honours Riverstown native, the late Tony McDermott. The unspoiled rural village of Riverstown, in an idyllic setting on the banks of the River Unshin, two miles off the N4 at Drumfin, for a most enjoyable music festival. Riverstown’s Irish name is Baile Idir Dhá Abhainn (between two rivers). It is an undiscovered tranquil rural retreat 9 miles from Sligo Town, locally noted for the relaxed warmth of its residents.

The organisers are currently putting the final touches to this years Scoil Acla Summer school. Scoil Acla follows the usual format of daily music classes which run from Monday to Saturday on the following instruments, accordion, banjo, flute, concertina, fiddle, harp, tin whistle, uileann pipes and bodhrán with beginners, intermediate and advanced students being catered for on all instruments. Other workshops available are creative writing, basket weaving, dancing and a course on Gaeilg’ Acla, the Achill dialect of Irish. Throughout the week they have recitals, poetry readings, creative writing readings, indoor and outdoor concerts, sessions, walks, talks and much more.

This renowned Summer School, now in its 24th year, will provide a full programme of workshops in traditional instruments – fiddle, flute, banjo, bodhrán, whistle, concertina, button accordion, piano accordion, harp, uilleann pipes, mandolin and bouzouki. Traditional accompaniment was successfully added to our programme last year and will be offered again in 2012. Tuition is also available in Set Dancing, Sean Nós Dancing, 2 Hand Dancing, Traditional Singing and Sean Nós Singing.

Over the years the range of traditional instruments being taught at the South Sligo Summer School has been gradually extended and includes the fiddle and flute which are synonymous with the South Sligo style, tin whistle, button and piano accordions, banjo, uilleann pipes, harp, concertina, bodhrán, traditional guitar, traditional keyboard accompaniment and singing classes in both sean-
nós style and traditional singing in English, as well as classes and demonstrations in lilting.
