love:live music launches with over 200 free live music events around the country on 21st June

Musicians from the Royal Irish Academy of Music today joined Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and Moore Street traders in Dublin for an impromptu musical performance on one of Dublin’s most iconic streets to announce the launch of love:live music, Ireland’s National Music Day on 21st June. This day-long celebration of Irish music of all genres will see thousands of musicians stage free live music events across the country. love:live music is presented by Music Network in association with RTÉ lyric fm and is funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and The Arts Council.
Commenting on the announcement, Minister Deenihan said: “Ireland is known throughout the world for its incredible musicians and unrivalled musical talent and love:live music is an exciting showcase of this. Projects such as this offer us an ideal opportunity to shine a spotlight on new trends and ‘new Irish music’, from traditional to the avant-garde. Musicians and singers of all genres, both amateur and professional, can take part. It is an opportunity to participate in the world’s largest free celebration of music, without any auditions. This event will bring together some of the most unique and exciting artists in Ireland in what promises to be a true celebration of the musical wealth in this country and a really special day for everyone.”
A highlight event taking place in Dublin is Lá Ceoil, a free showcase concert in Dublin’s Meeting House Square on Thursday 21st June, 6pm-10pm, funded by the Arts Council supporting Traditional Arts. Lá Ceoil will draw inspiration from Ireland’s indigenous music and will welcome an outstanding line-up of musicians including Buffalo in the Castle, We Banjo 3, The Unwanted, Tarab, Mick O’Brien, members of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and DIT Traditional Music Ensemble and special guest Seán Mac Erlaine along with the world première of an exclusive commission by RTÉ lyric fm composer in residence Linda Buckley.
“On one day in the year, love:live music promotes ‘access to music for all’, aiming to animate public space with music performance and participation in celebration of Ireland’s indigenous and diverse musical identity. Our ambition is to make Ireland the number one destination for International Music Day-trippers, (celebrated in 120 counties worldwide); and an essential ‘must do’ on the music tourist’s calendar. In nurturing this potential love:live music has curated Lá Ceoil , a packed line-up of exceptional musicians who are connected by their inimitable expressions of interpretations of traditional Irish music. This event has been designed with international audiences in mind, who can tune it to www.rte.ie/lyricfm to watch and listen to the concert steamed in realtime and for Irish listeners the concert will be broadcast RTÉ lyric fm (98.7),” commented Project Manager Jody Ackland.
Elsewhere, Clonmel Junction Festival and the Common Thread Café in conjunction with South Tipperary County Arts Office present: Clonmel Loves Live Music, 4 hours of Free Music on the streets of Clonmel including an outdoor music trail and a special live collaboration featuring award-winning and critically acclaimed singer Julie Feeney, the extraordinarily talented violinist Cora Venus Lunny, exuberant and innovative harper Laoise Kelly and the masterfully elegant and fluent guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, and culminating with a classical chamber concert at the County Museum at 8pm.

This innovative music series aims to bring new Irish music out of the concert hall and into offices and workplaces, inviting audiences to experience close encounters with new Irish music
Ennis Town in association with BallyO Promotions presents Clare Connections, a live music gathering in the heart of Ennis, Co. Clare; the home of traditional Irish music
Samba percussion performance by Scoil Treasa Naofa involving children from 10-13 years of age from 11am on Grafton Street, Dublin
Waltons New School of Music presents a Gospel Gathering at St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre from 6.30pm to 7.15pm
CAN Percussion Trio, three masters of orchestral percussion lead a free percussion workshop, open to the public from 11am to 1pm at St. Patrick’s Bandroom, Frenchville Lane, Galway. This event is presented in conjunction with Access Music Project and Macnas
