BOOK LAUNCH OF NEW COMPOSITIONS BY MARTIN POWER
On Friday, May 8th, the Niall Ó Cathasaigh branch of Comhaltas in Cork gathered to celebrate the launch of Martin Power’s first collection of original tunes. Martin is a renowned musician, composer, teacher and arranger who has made a remarkable contribution to the traditional music scene in many parts of his native county Cork.
The numerous and continued successes of his pupils proves testament to his outstanding ability as a teacher. In 1999, Martin co-founded Ceol le Chéile - an exciting traditional orchestra with fellow musician, Kathleen Nesbitt of Tipperary. A marvellous selection of tunes, there are some fifty-eight pieces here ranging from double jigs, hornpipes and reels to polkas, planxties, slip jigs, barndances, set dances and a waltz. One of the jigs, Carrigbawn, was recorded by Aoife Granville on her album, Sráid Eoin Shuffle, released in 2006. The new publication can be purchased from Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, 32 Belgrave Square, Monkstown, Co. Dublin.
